Marble Hunting

It is the last marble that fills the jar. Without all the other marbles you can never fill the jar up to top, screw the lid on and declare it ‘filled’.
What if failing is part of the process?
I recently gave it much thought: what is the purpose if trying one million things and not ‘achieving’ anything? Recently my friend showed me her new painting she is working on and remarked that she did not prepare the canvas like she usually does by priming the canvas. The result is the picture she is painting is absorbing all the coloured paint and the result is different than expected- it is more work. It becomes unpredictable and now takes more time to perfect because she has to wait for the paint to dry and to settle to reveal the dry paint picture.

Maybe the failures or marbles or boring white paint is the push-ups you need to build the muscle and predictability(sustainability) for the final product. It is only until the last marble drops you get to screw the lid on of the SUCCESS you want to stick your name on and put on the shelf to inspire(and teach) the generations to come.

I am the white noise
I am the backdrop
I am the canvas
against which you succeed.

It is a pixelated lifestyle
of being somebody and nobody
of taking the lead
of laying low.

But I love how I stay connected
and how I can go with the flow
When I am beautifully nested
against the light and darkness I know

I am the white noise
I am the backdrop
I am the canvass
without which you
cannot blend in or stand out
to succeed.

I am putting the final touches on my textbook Speak Afrikaans Easily- RayDawn is helping me put it all together. He is a talented graphic designer I discovered amongst all the Speak Afrikaans Easily students on my Whatsapp group. I am hoping to publish it after Women’s Day(happy Women’s Day!) I recently finished a video on a collaboration with Neal Stacey- he is the 2FEET4TB guy. I wrote a story-song about his life and the Woordfees wanted video content so I put some elbow grease into it. You can listen to the song and watch the video here.

Finding the door to your inner magic world where it is overflowing with jewels and treasure collecting dust in the cellar

Maya Angelou has recently inspired me with her life story(watch it here): I love how she shows up with her whole clan enveloped in who she is. I say ‘is’ because although she has moved on I recently saw her words displayed on a coffee shop wall.

my favorite words of Maya is: “Art is how the Spirit shows up into the world: through people who are creative with their life and works.”

I think you know you have made it when your words find their way on a coffeeshop wall as a quote to inspire the customers. Or in the hearts of people you met on yout journey through life.

And yes the writing is on the wall for newsletters like this

In the past many people have got to know me as the one who #talks a lot, #sings a lot, #writes a lot and #nurses a lot.
I have many goals including winning a SAMA, a Grammy, inspire people and sometimes it feels – going to the moon!

PS Footcare as usual.

We will do it together.

It has always been my dream to inspire people to find their purpose and run with it. My way of doing it is through writing songs. Recently I was (*1)made aware of a boy who needed help. Quickly a song was born, released with a lot of love from David Zipse’s music production skills and the powerful delivery of Indosakusa The Morning Star.
And as everybody knows: good stuff happens in three’s: next (*2)Woordfees asked submissions for video content and we rushed to make the week deadline that was given (I was still on holiday in Kwazulu Natal) We made it happen! #Together.
Now the challenge is to get the song out to the world to do its thing: inspire and empower people! (*3)You are the third magic component: by watching (and sharing) the video you can show your support.

Why else write another song?

To me this is a song that matters. What a privilege to collaborate with David Zipse and Indosakusa The Morning Star. Thank you for being part of the people who work together to make the world a better place: one song at a time. And for you listening, sharing and being part of the magical world of healing with music.

A Song For Rodwell

Rodwell is nine years old and lives in Zimbabwe. He has a dream to become a doctor, to heal the world.

Friday, 9 June his grandmother took him to an all-night-church meeting. While sleeping with the other children he was attacked by a hyena.

He now needs a new nose, cheeks, upper-lip and left eye. Rodwell is in good spirits in hospital keeping up with his schoolwork- especially Maths and English.

He arrived in South Africa last week where a miracle medical team is engineering his future and face.

Could it be that a boy can really heal the world? Yes, by bringing people and their gifts together.

Will it cost a lot? Yes, about one million rands, one million opportunities to show you care.

Can you give a hand? Yes, Rodwell represents every child with a dream. He becomes the voice of many reaching out to bring connection between people again- in a World that relies too much on just WIFI.

Face the World

Chorus:
Face the world every day
A world to face
Just a boy with a dream to heal the world
Just a boy for the world to heal
Hold my hand and we will do it together

Verse 1:
Go to church
But also be church
I love myself and my neighbors
I love the God who made us
And His plan for us
To be brave and courageous

Face the world every day
A world to face
Just a boy with a dream to heal the world
Just a boy for the world to heal
Hold my hand and we will do it together

Verse 2:
Reaching out
And allow to be touched
Together we are stronger
I love the way we are all gifted
Gifts we share with one another

There are hyenas lurking
Making prey of the innocent
After the maul what emerges
Is a face of the future
Who has to face the world every day

Just a boy for the world to heal
Hold my hand and we will do it together

Yessss, it happened! Encore Marthie! A sold out show with Bram Potgieter as part of #HeuerHuiskonserte in Stellenbosch 9 June 2021. The highlight was this picture Gershwynn created for me as a gift. I asked for his biography and discovered- without knowing it- I was part of it! It just shows you never know when and how you become part of someone else’s story! I am sharing his bio below…
If you missed the show: you can buy the 25 songs : 25 years’ best songs in music by clicking on the link below OR you can book a House Concert at your place!

“GERSHWYNN LEO KAY, BORN 03 MARCH 1972

The first born of four siblings and only one that is left-handed. I started drawing before I can remember and never seen myself as an artist but my art as a hobby. When I draw or paint I go into my own world and it relaxes me and brings me peace that just cannot be explained. I’m a Pisces and very much a dreamer.

Draughtsman by profession for over 15 years in construction. I worked in Cape Town, Johannesburg and in Mozambique. Working away from home for months at a time I use to do self-portraits of work colleagues with no charge, simply because I enjoyed the challenge.

Since COVID-19 pandemic forced me to be unemployed from construction, I’ve found myself with lots of time on my hands. Time I used to paint and escape from the problems and the world.

This is when I met Marthie Nel that inspired me with her energy and straight forwardness, telling that I have a talent and that she is not one bit sorry for me sitting at home jobless and I’m doing nothing with it. I told her that I did not like critics, that’s why I do not put myself out there for the world to shoot me down. That I Love my art and I’m my own biggest fan. I am always amazed with myself when I finish a drawing or painting and could stare at it for hours. I fear people will not appreciate my art and see what I see.

Marthie Nel told me “who cares, that there will always be critics and that I must take that negative criticism and turn it around and learn from it and make it a positive”. She then did the most amazing thing, she told me that she is planning a concert to promote my paintings! WOW! Now if that’s not motivation and believing in somebody, then I don’t know what is!

After advertising my paintings on my WhatsApp up status, I sold my first painting for a whopping R2500! The buyer told me the painting was worth every rand.

With this new found inspiration, I want to paint as much as I can, it’s always been my passion, more no With this new found inspiration, I want to paint as much as I can, it’s always been my passion, more now so than ever!

My family and friends always believed in me, it’s time I do too.”

The Bridge Builder Generation

Now is the time- to stop building walls and start Building bridges.
Now is the time to demonstrate to society- unite and build more bridges .
Now is the time -To teach our kids statements and talks at home of-how to build bridges.

Let us take time -to have enough courage
Let us take time- to take people with us – When we cross the bridge….
Let us take time- I can show you how- To get to the other side.

Chorus: Let us be The Bridge Builder Generation
Let them call us the ones who made them proud
Let the generations to come
Say we did it all with love
Let’s break free from the shacks and the shackles
We rise above it all
finding a bright new future
With love from me to you

We build too many walls
and not enough bridges.
Ooh there’s Too many walls
Let’s build more bridges

No batteries required

There’s nothing like the first time you press down on a piano key and it returns a sound. It is instant gratification that doesn’t need anything more than swinging feet and curious fingers. My first moment happened at my grandmother’s house and that piano was the same one I practiced on for my final piano exam. We spent hours together every day! 3 hours of serious practice, 1 hour of singing and then my treat: 1 hour of songwriting! You can’t hug a piano but if you could, I would. The next best thing would be tuning it and taking care of it.

I have a show 9 June at Heuer Musikhaus and the drumroll is which piano to play on at that location. I give the pianos names (like people) because none of them are alike: some are like ponytail girls and others like lazy old ladies. My favorite would be the sexy, warm-tone colored one…
Once you meet the lot at Heuer Musikhaus it’s like becoming family – from spotting the huge piano facade to entering the door and stepping on the piano gadget for hand sanitizer to every friendly face who calls the space their home away from home (aka work). No piano is too heavy or location too high or remote to be delivered, even for a three week holiday where, a crane was needed to finish the task. (You can view the miracle here: bit.ly/3wWaxA0) More information about pianos (and other music gadgets) can be found here: www.wheuer.co.za.

Now if you want to see some piano-action (and singing) the #EncoreMarthie show is from 19-21:00. Tickets are available at Quicket (link below) or at the door.

I hope to see you there! (If you can not make it you can download the Encore Marthie album with 25 Top Songs here bit.ly/34unCnY)

Marmite Moves

Recently I ran out of marmite(yes I am one of those crazy people that eat it on toast). I was amazed to find out that my favorite grocery shop also ran out. To discover there are two factories in the world producing marmite: in England and South Africa.
Funny thing about marmite is: it’s iconic bottle design has stayed the same for over a hundred years!

“A famous German scientist, Justus Freiherr Von Liebig (12th May 1803 – 18th April 1873) accidentally discovered that the waste product derived from yeast used in brewing beer could be made into a meaty flavoured concentrate that was completely vegetarian.

This scientist and professor, considered to be the founder of organic chemistry, was the first to make and sell bouillon, a meat extract commercially before refrigeration due to it being concentrated. So not only did he discover what eventually became Marmite, but he developed the process for beef extract and founded a company called Liebig Extract of Meat Company, which eventually trademarked as OXO.” There is actually a marmite museum (read more bit.ly/2SJZ1c8) and it’s use are limited in e.g. Australia because the poor use it to brew alcohol with. It does have a high Vit B12 content.

But it’s true: you either love it or hate it. Makes me think: what accidents can you can come up with today that will take 100 years more to develop in a sellable iconic format, stay popular for another hundred years and become part of family culture.

Sounds to me like music… you stumble upon the magic chord progression, add a melody on top and out pops something timeless that becomes part of culture: is dangerous to some, beneficial to others, divides and unifies.
Looks like we need to make more mistakes to get to the magic potions quicker!

To stay motivated for the last mile has been something I have had on my mind recently. The idea of finishing the race you started a while ago… like getting your last child through grade 12(with a driver’s license)

I recently saw a hilarious video of tortoise and hare which reminded me sooo much of myself- it is not that I don’t have the ability tp finish it is just I get distracted easily… you can watch the video here bit.ly/3vdGd3J
Dis I mention I have a show it’s called ‘Encore Marthie!’ And celebrates 25 years of music and my best songwriting(ok all the encores did not fit on the program but we did pur best) The album will be ready soon to download and streaming information for the show is in the works!

Ready Steady…, ready steady…, ready steady….

Go!
I have a Show!
I can’t wait to share it with you! I. Am. Super. Excited.
Went from ✔️bored(and daydreaming) to ✔️focused flow to ✔️frazzled. Apparently it’s a thing…
Get a buddy to breath with and don’t eat the marshmallow immediately because if you wait a bit… you get TWO! You can watch Daniel Goleman’s talk on ‘Focus the Hidden Driver of Excellence’ here bit.ly/33tDUgs.
Recently I have been overwhelmed trying to get back in the driver’s seat of what I believe my life looked like when I was still ‘in control’ before COVID. There is beauty in being forced to stand still and evaluate (and experience) the opposite of normal.

So: back to the show! Hans said yes for the venue: Heuer Musichaus(it has enough pianoooos!).Bram is playing piano(we have indeed been making music and magic together for 25 years!). Dave will be making sure the sound is sound. Wendy is helping me keep my hat on in putting it together. And Gerald is in charge of graphic design. Natalie cut my hair and …and …and… so many people lining up with their talents to create a wonderful event just for you!
I even changed my theme from pretty gospel to 25 YEARS OF THE BEST SONGS IN MY MUSIC CATALOGUE. (Afr&Eng).

Please join me- link below(if I get the streaming brain-waved it will be online too) I am also releasing a special edition album via bandcamp.

You do you, do it well, do it again! Encore to you, encore to women, encore to men, encore to families, encore to life: it’s time to step into your light(again)

Chorus:

Did you fall asleep?

Then it’s time to wake up again! The photo is Spike our Hungarian Viszla who recently found his way on anew adventure: a day at the beach and he was having fun all the way. He was particularly interested in the birds on the deep side of the waves.

These days I have to pinch myself to remember that there is a life beyond COVID. I see it as the Third World War with the soldiers being the nurses and doctors, researches and even the motorcyclists delivering food… Is it over? No- but we are still in the land of the living…So better make the day count.
This is one of my favorite children’s stories(is it for children?🤔) about nagging lives/wives, getting away from it all and dragging your beard behind you twenty years later… Quick! Grab a razor! This could become us!
“”Rip Van Winkle” is set in the years before and after the American Revolutionary War in a village at the foot of New York’s Catskill Mountains where Rip Van Winkle, a Dutch-American villager, lives. One autumn day, Van Winkle wanders into the mountains with his dog Wolf to escape his wife’s nagging. He hears his name called out and sees a man wearing antiquated Dutch clothing; he is carrying a keg up the mountain and requires help. Together, the man and Wolf proceed to a hollow in which Rip discovers the source of thunderous noises: a group of ornately dressed and bearded men who are playing nine-pins.

Van Winkle does not ask who they are or how they know his name. Instead, he begins to drink some of their liquor and soon falls asleep. When he awakens on the mountain, he discovers shocking changes: his musket is rotting and rusty, his beard is a foot long, and his dog is nowhere to be found. He returns to his village, where he recognizes no one. He arrives just after an election, and people ask how he voted. Never having cast a ballot in his life, he proclaims himself a faithful subject of King George III, unaware that the American Revolution has taken place, and nearly gets himself into trouble with the townspeople until one elderly woman recognizes him as the long-lost Rip Van Winkle.

King George’s portrait on the inn’s sign has been replaced with one of George Washington. Van Winkle learns that most of his friends were killed fighting in the American Revolution. He is also disturbed to find another man called Rip Van Winkle; it is his son, now grown up. Van Winkle also discovers that his wife died some time ago but is not saddened by the news. He learns that the men whom he met in the mountains are rumored to be the ghosts of Henry Hudson’s crew from his ship, the Halve Maen. He also realizes that he has been away from the village for at least 20 years. His grown daughter takes him in and he resumes his usual idleness. His strange tale is solemnly taken to heart by the Dutch settlers, particularly by the children who say that, whenever thunder is heard, the men in the mountains must be playing nine-pins.” Source: Wikipedia

Anyway you’ll see I am awakening to many things including Music, Foot Care and Empowering… Are you ready for the thunder?

>Song of the week is my ‘I am the future’- wake up and feel it(your purpose) sung by Given Gisela. It is one of my personal favorites!
I am the future
V1: Will I make a difference, can I pay the price?

There’s so much work to do, Mountains to climb

Looking for answers, looking for leaders

Looking for someone to believe

V2: There’s so much good to fight for, history to be made

We can be the generation to transform and build

Wipe out world hunger, bring prosperity and peace

Bring and end and heal HIV

V3: If suffering is not your own, nor the problems of the world

Never underestimate the influence you can have

History showed courage, bought with sacrifice and love

History’s shown hope is contagious

Chorus: I am the leaders, I am the future

I am the one that you depend on to make the world grand

So be a Mandela, a mother Theresa

You think it’s up to kings and presidents, you’re wrong

It’s not what is out there, it is not where you’re from

It is the heart inside to know where you belong

So wake up and feel it

As long as this heart beats strong

The future is in my hands and I can change the world

The future is in my hands and I can change the world

Coda:Yes! I’m a believer, I am the future

I am the one that you depend on to make you proud
